'Header' principle

Instead of using a 2 part connector to terminate to a pcb, a header allows a 1 time connection to the board.

Instead of using a 2 part connector to terminate to a pcb, a ‘header’ allows a 1 time connection to the board. The header has a matrix of pins terminated and encapsulated onto a cable. The header can be flow soldered to the pcb with the flying cable held out of the way. This principle offers the following advantages:

  • Improved reliability. No interconnect involved after assembly.
  • Header shape/matrix can exactly suit the pcb area. It reduces weight and space.
  • Environmental factors such as temperature can be accommodated.
  • Often used in conjunction with a grommet or feedthrough.
  • Power and signal mix of wire and pins.
  • Cable exits to suit, see examples below.
  • A major cost saver, particularly if it eliminates a special 2 part connector.
